I’m Phil. I’m a 44 year English guy who moved to the US about 18 years ago having yomped-it around the world with a backpack and a girlfriend. I settled in Atlanta, GA with the backpack, some nasty washing and $267 in cash.
Now i have an amazing family, an obsession with technology start-ups and an avid curiosity to fix things i come across (even when they dont need fixing). I tried my hand at acting and retired all in the space of two years, i love to mountain bike and build tree houses.
What I Do
I create and run start-up technology companies. It all began in 1996 with a cheese sandwich and a lunchtime when i inadvertently got engrossed in a documentary on the Discovery Channel about this game changing new technology called “the Internet”. I got hooked. Within a week a friend had bought me a computer and showed me how to use it, in return for me writing him a marketing plan for his software product. The plan looked good so we started our first company.
Fast forward almost two decades: I’ve had what most would consider one big home run called Netzip.com – if you ever download files in the days of modems and used that little “Pause & Resume” button, that was us; I co-founded another start-up, an Internet phone company (Vocalocity), that is still doing pretty well; and i’ve been involved in a number of other really interesting businesses since – in education (OpenStudy) and non-profit for inner city kids (Soccer In The Streets) to mention two.
My current start-up is called FlashIssue.com and we help people create better social marketing campaigns online – “if you hate creating email newsletters, then you’ll love us”.
After getting frustrated at how most quality start-up assistance excludes entrepreneurs from “the wrong side of the tracks” I launched a not-for-profit called FounderMachine.org. We now serve as a start-up accelerator for disadvantaged entrepreneurs.
